Was at Penang during the weekend for a programme called LEAD aka Lasallian Expedition And Development Camp organized by the Lasallian Formation Team. A total of 12 Organising Members took charge of the camp held in CCC, Batu Ferringhi.
What is LEAD you ask? it’s a camp for form two students who are underprivilege. Students who can’t afford to go for camps and also who are not doing very well in school. This year the school we targeted was St. Xavier’s Penang. A total of 25 students were chosen to go for this ‘motivational’ camp. It is camp filled with fun activities with plenty lessons to learn.
The camp started on Friday afternoon. After registering and cleaning up the rooms it was time for some icebreakers. I was in charge. Frankly speaking, I was working under par that day cause I had a bad morning. Even my fellow oragnizing members realised that. Anyway, the day continued with some wacky games and some funny antics were seen. That nite it was time for treasure hunt. Kimberly and Vinesh really made the kids run up and down. Oh ya, I was also put in charge of a group. The COBRA SXI….haha aka Group 3. Made up of Qin Ron, Tinesh, Firdouz (damn funny boy), Amin, Sateesh, Buva. A really great mix of boys but very very very cheeky.
The next morning, the boys woke up early for their morning jog along the beach. Well it was tiring. Vinesh actually was jogging with a boy giving him encouragement. Little did he know, he kept calling the boy the wrong name. The boy was too tired to rectify that, that he just continue nodding his head. After breakfast we had a Amazing Race kinda Hike for them. They had to go into some hotels to ask for information. Time to practice their communication skills. My group went to Parkroyal Plaza (my fav hotel). My goodness you should have seen the looks on their faces. Damn high class. but they did well. Then it was time to have a session with Eric on Personal Development. Here we got to see some wonderful talents. After lunch time for Team Building session with Navin. Didn’t really sit in for this cause was sleepy and I took an hour power nap. Games came and it was Kabadi, Pyramid building and also an obstacle race. Really tiring for them but hey it was fun splashing water on them. Time for talent time at nite. Really great performances. Even us the OTs did a splendid job on Doctor’s Office which was really really hilarious. Then we went pasar malaming. Bought me self 8 DVDs for RM 32….haha support piracy…The night ended with the kids creating thank you cards for their sponsors.
Woke up early next morning cause was the day chair that day. After a little strecthing, we had sand building castle competition. My group was declared the best team work group. After tat, we had workshops for them. We had two workshops, Drama and Music. The kids had fun alright learning some new stuffs. The day ended with a session on goal building which kinda sums up the whole camp. After cleaning up, we said goodbye to the kids and off we went to St. Xavier’s for our evaluation.
Frankly speaking, this year’s LEAD for me was different. I was more up close and personal with some of the kids compared to last year. I was really really fond of Wilson and Qin Ron cause I really see big potential in them. i pray that this camp wil in a way tell them that they can make it in life. They just need a little more pushing and more work to suceed. For me, I guess I learn that everything has a reason (thanks Eric for pointing that out). Even if we do not why somethings happened but there is always a reason. We may not what but there is a reason. My highlight of the camp was of course the kids especially in talent time. They really showed me that they have talent and they have a future. So to the kids in LEAD 2005 all the best in your future. To the OTs thanks for being there for me during my troubles. Thanks Thanks Thanks
